With writing, two pairs of eyes are usually better than
one. No matter how many times one proofreads one's own writing, errors can slip
through. To ensure maximum clarity, accuracy, readability, and effectiveness,
and to eliminate the risk of errors, having someone with experience proofread
or edit your work is always recommended.
Improve clarity, grammar, and structure
There are different types of editing. Descriptions are given below, with definitions
taken from the Editors' Association
of Canada:
- Copy Editing: "Editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation,
and other mechanics of style; checking for consistency of mechanics and internal
consistency of facts. (...) May include Canadianizing; metrication; providing
or changing system of citations; writing or editing captions and/or credit lines;
writing running heads (...)."
If language isn't your strong suit, or if English isn't your first language, we
can help you put your ideas into words that will communicate with readers effectively.
- Stylistic Editing: "Clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon,
smoothing language, and other non-mechanical line-by-line editing. May include
checking or correcting reading level; creating or recasting tables and/or figures
(...)."
We can help you make sure that the style and level of your writing is appropriate to your task and to your reader.
- Substantive or Structural Editing: "Clarifying and/or reorganizing
a manuscript for content and structure. Changes may be suggested to or drafted
for the author. (...)."
Once you have completed your research and established the ideas that will be in
your paper, it can be difficult to arrange them into a cohesive structure. It
is important for a paper to guide the reader easily from point to point, and
to illustrate clearly the relationships between your ideas. We have helped many
people shape their ideas into eloquent, organized papers. If you've got the ideas,
but lack the structure, we can help.
